Religion and faith are a dominant force in the lives of many of the people of Clarke County. Churches are the focal point for social and religious activities, especially in rural areas. The County has about 200 churches of various denominations, including Baptist, United Methodist, Assemblies of God, Catholic, Episcopal, Church of God, Church of Christ, Pentecostal, Pentecostal Holiness, Seventh Day Adventist, Nazarene, AME, and Apostolic. A number of the churches were established in the mid 1800’s, and the Shubuta Baptist Church, Shubuta United Methodist Church, and St. Mary’s Episcopal in Enterprise are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The people of Clarke County are very generous, being ranked 10th in the state per capita of discretionary income in charitable giving.
